Meet Taylor Alexander

Taylor Alexander is the Founder and President of T.E.A.M. She was born and raised in Michigan. She earned a B.S. in Mathematics in 2019 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where she was a Meyerhoff Scholar and Division I Volleyball player. She now holds her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Houston.

While Alexander has gained substantial research experience examining ethnic and gender disparities in STEM; she aims to use her career to create and improve culturally competent programs that address inequalities present in athletics and STEM. With the emotional and physical hardships that come with being an athlete, Alexander wanted to create a program that better assisted and supported student athletes’ current and transitional needs. She hopes T.E.A.M. will give the power back to the athletes by ultimately providing them with the support system they need.

Taylor’s Athletic Transition Story

“My parents would always tell me they knew I was going to be an athlete, because by the age of two I had already outgrown my jungle gym. I was first a gymnast, but a couple years and one volleyball camp later, I found myself on my elementary school’s varsity volleyball team.

Participating in athletics was one of the best experiences of my life. The unconditional support system, unforgettable travel experiences, and skills I accumulated are irreplaceable. However, I didn’t recognize how much of my identity was consumed by athletics, until I graduated college, and realized I didn’t even know what I enjoyed doing for fun.

I struggled tremendously with my mental health, and worked out profusely as an escape. I eventually learned how to actively build the life I envisioned through exploring my other talents like dance, and fashion. I learned how to properly balance my food intake, so I no longer felt like I had to workout every day. It took several years of patience, dedication, and sacrifice but I appreciate the new parts of my identity and look forward to helping other student-athletes take ownership of theirs as well.”
